Brussels is more than a 1000 years old and is the bilingual capital of the Kingdom of Belgium.
Furthermore, it is a cosmopolitan city
where many different cultures live together.
Brussels, is considered to be "The
capital of Europe". The city offers
different architectural styles. Gothic
cathedrals and churches, or beautiful art
nouveau and art deco houses. The heart of
Brussels is the Grand'Place (Grote Markt).
This historic market square is one of the
most beautiful town squares in Europe, and
maybe even in the world.
The Sablon is one of the most prestigious and attractive areas in Brussels. In recent years it has become the center of the antiques shops and art galleries.
New
York has the Statue of Liberty, Copenhagen
has the mermaid and Brussels has the...
Manneken Pis. This statue of a little boy
has since several centuries been a major
tourist attraction in the city. When most
people see our 'manneken', the first
reaction is always one of amazement: "Look,
how small he is ! Why does everybody want to
see him ?" The people of Brussels, however,
accept him the way he is. After all, it
doesn't always have to be big to be
beautiful. Imagine he would be the size of
the Statue of Liberty : Brussels would be
continuously flooded !
The
St. Hubert gallery dates back to the 19th
century: it is a covered shopping gallery.
Today the gallery continues to attract a lot
of visitors. There you can find nice
luxurious shops (e.g. chocolate houses,
books, boutiques,...) and beautiful cafés.
From the center of the gallery one can also
see the famous Beenhouwersstraat/ Rue de
Bouchers, which is still a famous restaurant
area in Brussels.
Other highlights: Atomium, Royal Palace with Royal Park, Royal Square, Chinatown, Fish Market,...
